The Tower Suite on floor 9 has a private deck with arguably the best Bay views of any room — worth asking about for special occasions

Why It Matters

One of the Bay Area's oldest operating resort hotels, open since 1915. The central tower is 160 feet tall and made entirely of wood, making it one of the tallest wooden structures in the world. The Forbes 4-Star spa has 32 treatment rooms. As of March 3, 2025, the property left the Fairmont brand and operates independently under Ohana Real Estate Investors, who paid $163 million for it in 2023.

The Claremont is a 1915 landmark sitting on 22 acres in the hills straddling Berkeley and Oakland — white, turreted, and impossible to miss against the East Bay hillside. Known as the White Castle on the Hill, it reopened as an independent resort in March 2025 after leaving the Fairmont fold. The views of San Francisco Bay from the upper floors are genuinely spectacular — on a clear day you can pick out the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, and the city skyline all at once. But the real draw here is The Club: 40,000 square feet of fitness, three heated saline pools, 8 tennis courts, 4 pickleball courts, and 75+ weekly wellness classes that guests access free of charge. The Spa at Claremont holds a Forbes 4-Star rating and has 32 treatment rooms.
