Fugaku Gunjo
Modern art-museum minimalism meets traditional Japanese ryokan. Austere, serene, very adult. The whole place is about stillness and that one view.
Mount Fuji is visible only about 30% of the year — don't plan the whole trip around it, but do check weather forecasts before arrival.
Why It Matters
One of a very small number of places in Japan where you can soak in a private mineral hot spring bath while looking directly at Mount Fuji rising above the sea. Holds 1 Michelin Key. Just eight rooms — maximum five with open-air baths booked per day — so it stays genuinely exclusive.
Fugaku Gunjo is an eight-room ryokan on the western coast of the Izu Peninsula, sitting above Suruga Bay with Mount Fuji framed directly across the water. The property looks and feels like a minimalist art museum dropped into the coastline — water gardens at the entrance, restrained natural materials throughout, and every room pointed squarely at the view. It is not a traditional tatami-and-futon ryokan; this is modern luxury with strong Japanese bones: think emu and HALO designer furniture alongside private onsen tubs and tatami resting areas. Awarded 1 Michelin Key.
