Excelsior Vittoria
Grand historic Italian hotel with genuine family-owned warmth. Old-world elegance — frescoed ceilings, Vietri tiles, marble bathrooms — without feeling stuffy. Each of the 79 rooms is individually decorated, not cookie-cutter. Feels more like a private estate than a managed chain property. Six generations of Fiorentino family ownership keeps it personal.
Book Terrazza Bosquet well before arrival — it fills fast in peak season and is closed Tuesdays
Why It Matters
Family-owned continuously since 1834 — one of Italy's longest-running luxury hotel dynasties. Enrico Caruso lived here for a month in 1921, his suite preserved largely as he left it. Wagner, Goethe, Princess Margaret, and King Edward VII (then Prince of Wales) also stayed. Terrazza Bosquet has held a Michelin star for 11 consecutive years. Ruins of Emperor Augustus's villa are said to lie beneath the property.
On a cliff above Piazza Tasso, this family-owned property has been welcoming guests since 1834. Three 19th-century villas sit inside a five-acre park of orange and olive trees, completely insulating you from street noise despite being seconds from Sorrento's center. A private elevator drops you directly to Marina Piccola, which changes how you experience the entire peninsula — Capri is 25 minutes away, Positano 30.
