LIMONCELLO & LA DOLCE VITA
Sorrento runs on lemons and tourism. About 90% of the town's economy depends on visitors, which means everyone speaks English, menus exist in six languages, and the streets are designed for wandering. But scratch below the surface and there's genuine Neapolitan soul here. Lemons are everywhere — locals tend lemon groves like they're sacred, and the town is the birthplace of limoncello. The culture blends southern Italian warmth, a strong Catholic tradition, and a resort-town polish that can feel a little polished. Rick Steves puts it well: "The Sorrentines have gone out of their way to create a completely safe and relaxed place for tourists to come and spend money." That's not a criticism — it works. But if you want gritty, real-deal southern Italy, take the 40-minute train to Naples. Sorrento gives you the greatest hits, refined and wrapped in citrus.

Local Customs
La passeggiata is real here.
Every evening, locals do a leisurely stroll through the streets — join them rather than rushing to dinner at 6pm like a tourist.. Italians eat late.
Lunch starts around 1-2pm, dinner not before 8pm. Show up at 7pm and you'll be the only one in the restaurant.. Coffee culture has rules: espresso at the bar costs around €1.
10-1.45 and is drunk standing up. Sit down at a table and the price jumps.
Never order a cappuccino after 11am unless you want raised eyebrows.. Tipping is not expected or required in Italy. Service (coperto) is usually already included in the bill.
Rounding up or leaving €1-2 for exceptional service is fine, but don't feel obligated.. Dress code for churches is firm: cover shoulders and knees. This applies everywhere from the Cathedral to the Cloister of San Francesco.
Carry a light scarf in your bag.. Cash still matters. Most places accept cards above €20-30, but bars and small market stalls expect cash.
You cannot legally pay over €1,000 in cash in Italy.. August 10-20 is Ferragosto — peak Italian domestic holiday. Prices spike 15-25%, everything is mobbed.
Plan around it if you can.
Safety
Sorrento is genuinely safe for tourists.
Violent crime is extremely rare. The real threats are the classic tourist-town nuisances: pickpockets on crowded buses and around Piazza Tasso, and occasional scams targeting distracted visitors. Keep your phone and wallet out of back pockets on the Circumvesuviana train to Naples — that line is notorious. Don't leave bags unattended at the beach while swimming. Solo female travelers report feeling comfortable here. The pedestrian-only streets in the centro storico add an extra layer of ease. Piazza Tasso, despite being the busiest spot in town, is considered one of the safer areas.

Getting Around
The Circumvesuviana train is the backbone of regional transport — it connects Sorrento directly to Pompeii (35 min), Herculaneum, and Naples (70 min) for around €3-4 per ride.
Buy tickets before boarding and validate them. Ferries from Marina Piccola run to Capri (€21.50, 25 min), Naples by hydrofoil (€16-18.50, 40 min), Positano, and Amalfi. SITA buses handle the coastal road to Positano and Amalfi — buy tickets at tabacchi shops for around €1.80-6.80 depending on distance. Local EAV buses run five routes around town for €1.20 each, also pre-purchased. Taxis are expensive — expect €20 even for short hops, plus a €4-per-bag surcharge. The town center itself is compact and walkable. A public lift near Villa Comunale connects the clifftop center to sea level and saves you the sweaty climb back up. Driving is technically possible but genuinely painful — narrow roads, aggressive Italian drivers, and almost no parking.
