Hotel Bel-Air
Old Hollywood glamour meets serene California cool. Residential, low-key, private. The kind of place where celebrities go specifically to not be spotted. Think crackling fireplaces, private garden patios, cashmere throws, and the sound of swans.
Ask for a Canyon View room — perched on the hillside above the main property, they have outdoor fireplaces and hot tubs and feel almost completely private
Why It Matters
One of LA's last genuinely private luxury retreats — Elizabeth Taylor honeymooned here, Grace Kelly visited so often a suite bears her name, and Marilyn Monroe's final Vogue shoot happened on the grounds. Now ranked in the World's 50 Best Hotels and on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List 2022, the hotel has layered a sharp new culinary program (Joe Garcia, formerly of The French Laundry) onto its already formidable legacy.
Opened in 1946 on 12 acres of canyon gardens in LA's most exclusive zip code, Hotel Bel-Air is where Hollywood has always come to disappear. Pink Spanish Colonial bungalows, a Swan Lake you cross by foot bridge, 483 specimen trees — it feels nothing like a hotel. After a two-year, top-to-bottom renovation by Alexandra Champalimaud and the Rockwell Group (reopened October 2011), all 103 rooms were rebuilt while keeping the property's singular, residential soul intact. It's ranked No. 42 on the World's 50 Best Hotels 2025 list.
