Why It Matters
On the National Register of Historic Places, the building debuted as the Hotel Californian in 1923. Former owner Lizzie Glide transformed it in 1935 into the city's only temperance hotel. The name 'Spero' honors her philanthropic legacy — Latin for hope. The blue sparrow symbol runs throughout the property as a nod to that history. Bar Esper, opened May 2026, is positioned as a serious neighborhood dining destination with Portuguese-Japanese culinary fusion.
A 1923 Spanish Colonial Revival building on the National Register of Historic Places, Hotel Spero pulls off something genuinely rare: a historic hotel that doesn't feel like a museum. Architects Perkins+Will handled the 2018 overhaul, keeping the intricate lobby tilework and soaring ceilings while weaving in warm geometric accents and glass-enclosed Spanish-tiled showers. It's part of IHG's Vignette Collection now — 236 rooms, two blocks from Union Square, with a brand-new tavern (Bar Esper, opened May 2026) worth visiting in its own right.

The recently upgraded standard king rooms are a solid choice. Glass-enclosed showers set against Spanish-tiled bathrooms are a cut above typical hotel bathrooms at this price. Oversized picture windows bring in real natural light — not a slit-window situation.

Compact at 200–230 sq ft but well-designed with contemporary patterns and a fully equipped workspace. Good natural light from expansive windows. Fine for one or two travelers keeping it simple.
QueenSerenity Suite
The largest standard suite at 490 sq ft — genuinely spacious for San Francisco. Separate bedroom, hardwood-floored living room with sofa bed, and a glass-enclosed shower with Spanish tiles. The sun-drenched description isn't marketing fluff; the windows are big.
Two Double Bedroom
The best bet for families or two-person groups who want separate beds. Same 260 sq ft as the king, so it's snug with four people. Desk, chair, and picture windows round it out.
Two DoublesUrban Suite
More breathing room than the standard rooms. Hardwood floors, a sofa bed for extra guests, and a brightly lit workspace. Bathrobe included. Good pick if you want separate living and sleeping areas without going full suite pricing.
