Why It Matters
One of France's most architecturally significant hotel conversions. A classified Historic Monument since 1923, the building operated as a hospice for 533 years before becoming a hotel. It also runs the only spa with a heated indoor pool in Lille.
A 15th-century hospice turned five-star hotel, L'Hermitage Gantois sits right between Lille's Town Hall and the Beaux-Arts Museum. Founded in 1462 and used as a hospital until 1995, it was fully restored and opened as a hotel in 2003. The bones are extraordinary: Gothic vaulted ceilings, original floor tiles, Louis XV oak paneling, and interior courtyards that feel genuinely historic rather than themed.

The largest non-suite rooms at 30–40m², and some of them are former cells of the Sisters of Saint Augustin — the nuns who ran the hospice. That's about as interesting a room backstory as you'll find anywhere. Bathtub, Nespresso machine, bathrobes and slippers. Spa access included. A genuinely comfortable step up.

Three separate rooms — entrance area, living room, and bedroom — tucked up in the attic at 40m² total. Intimate and cosy rather than grand, with exposed beams and the character that comes from being in a medieval roofline. Arrival chocolates and port, Nespresso, umbrella, and all the expected luxury extras. Spa access included. Champagne on arrival for Romantic Getaway bookings.

Privilege Room
Roomier than the Superior at 25–30m², and notably some of these rooms still have original historical features — working fireplaces, exposed beams — that genuinely connect you to the building's 15th-century past. Contemporary comfort throughout. Spa pool and hammam access included.

The entry point to the hotel, and honestly still impressive. Louis XV-style oak paneling alongside ultra-contemporary furniture and a Stark chair. Carrara marble bathrooms with either a bathtub or shower. All the standard hotel kit: safe, minibar, A/C, individually adjustable heating, bathrobes and slippers. One catch: spa access (pool and hammam) costs €15 extra per person per stay, unless you're a Marriott Bonvoy member.
Superior Room
Overlooks the inner courtyards or gardens — the peaceful ones that make you forget you're in a city. Average 20m², so not especially large, but the setting compensates. Same Louis XV oak paneling, Stark chair, Carrara marble bathrooms, original tile or carpeted floors. Spa access (pool and hammam) is included in this category.
