LOQUAT Nishi Izu
Historic Japanese architecture meets Italian gastronomy. Quiet, deeply local, and slow. This is not a resort with a roster of activities — it's a place where the absence of distraction is the luxury. Serious food and serious onsen, wrapped in centuries of wood and earthen walls.
Ask staff about the secret sunset spot — it offers views of the Nishi-Izu coastline and Mt. Fuji, and it is not publicized
Why It Matters
The only Italian auberge in Izu. Selected for the Michelin Guide Hotel Selection 2025. Named after the rare white loquat fruit found only in this corner of Toi during early summer — a fruit so delicate it cannot be transplanted or sold beyond the village. The property runs entirely on that hyper-local spirit: the restaurant has no fixed menu, the spa uses white loquat oil, and the gelato changes with whatever is ripe. The WEAZER annex pushes further — an off-grid module running entirely on solar power and filtered rainwater.
A 300-year-old Edo Period mansion in Toi, on the wild western coast of the Izu Peninsula, transformed into what the property calls an Italian auberge. The term is apt: think ryokan format — private rooms, personal concierge, spring-fed baths — but with a serious Italian kitchen at the center of everything. Only three groups stay per night, ever. The buildings are still the original kura storehouses of the Suzuki family, merchant landowners who once ran the charcoal trade by sea. Nothing has been bulldozed to build a lobby; the history is the point.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The garden of the former Suzuki estate. Early morning, before breakfast, is the recommended time — quiet, with the property entirely to yourself.
Each kura room and Villa SUGURO has its own private outdoor hot spring bath sourced directly from the Toi onsen. Terraces are over 40 sqm with deck chairs. The best time is after dinner under the stars — something multiple guests specifically call out as a trip highlight.
Guests are welcomed with complimentary gelato from SANTi upon arrival. The shop is also open throughout the day for guests and, where accessible, the public. Flavors change seasonally with whatever Nishi-Izu has ripe.
Staff will direct guests (on request) to a private spot near the property with views of the Nishi-Izu coastline and, on clear days, Mt. Fuji. Not advertised publicly — ask the concierge before dinner.
The Nishi-Izu coast has minimal light pollution. After the Kura Bar closes, soaking in your outdoor bath and watching the night sky is the standard close to the day. Multiple guest reviews describe this as a highlight of the stay.
Seasonal activity available in early summer when the white loquat trees on the property are fruiting. The fruit is so delicate it cannot be transported and is rarely found outside of Toi. Guests have reported being invited to harvest after check-out during the season.
