Hangaroa
Eco-luxury with deep indigenous roots. Rapa Nui culture isn't just decorative here — it drives everything from the architecture to the staff, many of whom are locals from the neighboring town. Casual but genuinely luxurious. Feels more like a sacred village than a resort.
Book the Full Experience program — it includes all meals plus two half-day excursions per night of stay, which is genuinely good value given how expensive island activities are à la carte
Why It Matters
The only five-star hotel on one of the most remote inhabited islands on Earth. Member of Leading Hotels of the World and part of the Nayara Resorts collection. Architecture directly inspired by the ancient Orongo ceremonial village, and the hotel runs on solar panels and wind turbines. The pool is reputedly the largest on the island.
Nayara Hangaroa sits on a small peninsula on Easter Island's southwest coast, just a short walk from the only town of Hanga Roa and less than 1km from Mataveri Airport. The 18-acre, 75-room resort is the island's only five-star property — and frankly, nothing else on the island comes close at this level. Every building is single-story, curved, and topped with grass roofs, a deliberate architectural tribute to the ancient Orongo ceremonial village. Rooms are made from cypress logs, volcanic rock, and handmade clay, with every surface rounded and organic. It works.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Boat excursions around the island's coastline can be arranged.
Hands-on cooking classes in Hangaroan traditional cuisine. The hotel's kitchen philosophy centers on zero-kilometer ingredients — sweet potatoes, plantain, mango, locally caught fish, and the indigenous Ra Rape lobster.
The hotel has an on-site cinema that screens free documentaries about Rapa Nui history and culture.
Hands-on class in the traditional art of moai carving, led by local artisans.
Local naturalist guides lead small-group tours to the island's moai sites, volcanic craters, and archaeological zones. Departures at 9:30am and 3:00pm. Guides are often descendants of Rapa Nui families with generational knowledge. Half-day or full-day formats available. The quarry visit and the 15 moai coastal site are guest favorites.
Approximately 3-hour guided bike tours through archaeological remains including the Ana Kakenga cave. Bikes also available to hire independently for riding into Hanga Roa town.
Guided hikes ranging from 3-hour coastal walks to a 15km full-day hike along the north coast. Trails pass volcanic craters, the Poike reforested park, and the Ana Kakenga cave. Some trails involve climbing stairs and rocks — not all flat terrain.
Complimentary wellness sessions offered every morning at 8:15am.
Hotel arranges snorkeling adventures along sea caves and, weather permitting, scuba diving expeditions through an outside private company. The Pacific currents around Easter Island are too rough for casual swimming, so these guided aquatic trips are the main way to get in the water.
Surfing experiences can be arranged through the hotel's concierge team.
Every February, Hanga Roa hosts the Tapati Rapa Nui festival — 10 to 14 days of ancient competitions, body painting, and the crowning of the Tapati Queen. The hotel sits right in the heart of it. Events include haka pei (sliding down a volcano on banana logs), Tortora raft racing, and banana-balancing competitions.
