Pensione America
Artisan-restored Italian coastal villa. Slow, sun-drenched, and adults-only. Breezy interiors, lush garden, handcrafted details everywhere. The vibe is dolce vita done with genuine taste rather than performative luxury.
Grab one of the hotel's green bicycles and ride to the Wednesday morning market in the town center — it's the authentic Forte dei Marmi social ritual.
Why It Matters
Founded in 1899 and a Dolce Vita-era refuge for artists, nobles, and bon vivants, the property was meticulously restored in 2025 with every detail made by Italian craftsmen. The iconic checkerboard pool and the on-site Tennis Club Roma — one of the oldest tennis clubs in Italy, now a protected cultural heritage site — set it apart from generic beach hotels. Member of The Leading Hotels of the World and selected for the Michelin Guide 2025. Run by the Maestrelli family's Collezione Em alongside Villa Roma Imperiale, Hotel Brunelleschi, and Violino d'Oro.
Once a humble guesthouse dating back to 1899, Pensione America reopened in April 2025 after a meticulous artisan restoration by architect Piera Tempesti Benelli and creative director Sara Maestrelli. It's an 18-room adults-only villa (13+) sitting about 200 meters from the sea, with a jaw-dropping checkerboard pool in green ceramic and marble as its garden centerpiece. The Maestrelli family's Collezione Em has kept it deliberately small and personal: hand-painted Sicilian tiles in every bathroom, custom bamboo furniture, Elena Carozzi wallpapers, and Santa Maria Novella bath products throughout. Forte dei Marmi draws old Italian money every summer, and this place fits that scene perfectly without being stuffy about it.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Bagno Assunta — the Maestrelli family's own beach club — is a 2-minute ride from the villa. Umbrellas and tents are available to rent by the day. Lunch is served with your feet in the sand at the adjacent restaurant.
The hotel's fleet of elegantly grey-green bicycles is available to guests at any time. In Forte dei Marmi, the bike is the right way to move — to the Wednesday morning market, to dinner, to the beach. Complimentary.
Hands-in-the-dough Italian cooking classes held on-site. Informal, fun, wine-in-hand approach — focused on the pleasure of cooking rather than technique perfection. Arranged on request.
A white-and-blue 100% electric van with retro styling is available for guest rides around town. No app, no waiting — just ask the front desk. Soft hum, sea breeze, very Forte dei Marmi.
Tennis Club Roma sits within the villa grounds and is one of the oldest tennis clubs in Italy — now protected as part of Forte dei Marmi's cultural heritage. Guests can reserve a court or arrange a lesson with an instructor. Playing here is a genuine piece of local history.
