Short Stories Hotels
California-contemporary boutique with European design DNA. Think herringbone wood floors, Carrara marble tables, Lefroy Brooks plumbing fixtures, and Venetian plaster walls. Relaxed but clearly considered.
Street-facing rooms can pick up Fairfax Avenue noise — ask for a courtyard-facing room if you are a light sleeper
Why It Matters
The complete reinvention of a much-loved LA institution — the old Farmers Daughter Hotel — into a design-forward boutique with serious cocktail credentials and one of the Fairfax District's best secret courtyards. Leo Grifka also runs Palihouse Culver City, so the hospitality pedigree is there.
Short Stories is a 66-room boutique hotel on South Fairfax, sitting directly across from the original Farmers Market and a short walk to The Grove. Formerly the beloved Farmers Daughter Hotel, it was completely reimagined by LA entrepreneur Leo Grifka of the Grifka Group into something sharper and more design-forward: a cultured California-contemporary property with classic European touches, featuring terrazzo floors, stained woods and brass, Kenton Nelson artwork on the walls, and a lush secret-garden courtyard at its heart. The pool and bar live in that same courtyard, canopied by Rhus Lancea trees and framed by Italian marble — it's the kind of spot you post, then refuse to leave.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel has offered periodic on-site yoga classes and wellness activities in the courtyard. Schedule varies; check with the hotel directly for current programming.
Regular weekday happy hour at The Bar, featuring discounted cocktails and bar bites in the courtyard. One of the better happy hour spots in the Fairfax neighborhood.
The hotel does not have an on-site gym but provides guests with access to a local gym partner — Easton Gym — located nearby on Fairfax. Complimentary or discounted access may vary; confirm at check-in.
The hotel has meeting and banquet facilities, including event spaces that can be configured for corporate meetings, private dinners, or social events. The courtyard is also available for private dining and events.
Year-round outdoor pool in the lush courtyard, with a separate sundeck for catching the California sun. Fenced and well-maintained. The courtyard setting — Rhus Lancea trees overhead, Italian marble around you — makes this a better-than-average hotel pool experience.
Short Stories markets its courtyard and event spaces as a wedding venue. The secret-garden courtyard with the stone fountain and lush greenery is the main draw for ceremonies and receptions.
