Why It Matters
The only directly-beachfront hotel in Santa Monica (along with its sister property Casa del Mar next door), fully designed by Michael S. Smith with museum-caliber contemporary art throughout. Michelin-noted dining, a serious wine program at 1 Pico, and 186 rooms plus 12 suites all styled like a well-appointed beach house rather than a generic hotel.
One of only two hotels in Santa Monica with direct beach access, Shutters sits right on the sand at the foot of the Santa Monica Pier. Designer Michael S. Smith — the same guy behind the Obama White House — styled the whole place to feel like a rambling East Coast summer cottage: gray shingles, white shutters, twin lobby fireplaces, and original art by David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein on the walls. It's effortlessly residential in a way most beach hotels can only gesture at.

Beach House Suite
The top floor of the Beach House building — 1,300 sq ft with the most expansive oceanfront views in the hotel. Two fireplaces, two balconies, a separate den with a full sofa bed for families or extra guests, and a full living room. Two fireplaces, Diptyque toiletries, hydrothermal tub, and a Dyson hairdryer. This is as residential as it gets.

Mid-tier guestroom with the same coastal cottage styling. Built-in shelves, blue and green ocean-inspired decor, and the full Shutters amenity suite.
Ocean Front King Room
The front-row seat at Shutters. Nothing between you and the Pacific except sand. Located in the Beach House building, these rooms have hardwood floors, area rugs, a built-in entertainment center, and most have a hydrothermal massage tub plus balcony. Diptyque amenities, Nespresso machine, and a Bluetooth speaker round out the setup.

Ocean View Suite
Suite with ocean views and a separate bedroom layout. Living room, king bed, hydrothermal tub, and the full complement of Shutters suite amenities.
Pacific View Suite
Located on the 7th floor of the Ocean House building — the best elevation for views. At 1,100 sq ft, it has a proper living room with a queen sleeper sofa, two balconies, a fireplace, hardwood floors, and a hydrothermal massage tub in the bathroom. Diptyque toiletries and a Dyson hairdryer.
