Former two-Michelin-star restaurant under Chef Srijith Gopinathan (Cal-Indian cuisine), acquired by Taj in the largest hotel deal in SF history, and a 100+ year address right on Union Square with some of the most genuinely attentive staff in the city.
A San Francisco landmark since 1909, this intimate 110-room hotel sits right on the east side of Union Square — quietly tucked between the big-chain giants, which is exactly the point. Taj Hotels acquired it in 2007 (at the time, the largest hotel deal in the city's history), and kept its Spanish Colonial Revival bones intact while upgrading the experience. The rooms lean contemporary Italian, with sandy earth tones and pearwood paneling; double-pane windows actually block out the Union Square noise. The real standouts are the legendary kitchen — which held two Michelin stars under Chef Srijith Gopinathan before the pandemic, and now houses the new Bombay Brasserie — and a staff where some members have been on the floor for over 20 years.
