The Surfrider Malibu
Barefoot luxury. California surf culture meets globetrotting interior design. Raw woods, natural linen, hammocks woven by Amazonian tribes, and farm-to-glass cocktails. The opposite of a corporate hotel.

Why It Matters
The only true boutique hotel directly opposite Surfrider Beach — one of the world's most famous surf breaks. Originally built in 1953, overhauled by a Californian architect, an Australian free spirit, and an Italian race car driver into a design-forward, sustainability-focused retreat with a fiercely guest-only rooftop restaurant.
A 1953 motel transformed into one of Malibu's best boutique hotels, sitting directly across PCH from Surfrider Beach and the Malibu Pier. Just 20 rooms, all designed with teak, natural stone, handwoven hammocks, and organic linens to feel like your own private California beach house. No pool, no gym, no spa — but the guest-only rooftop restaurant with panoramic views of First Point more than compensates.

In-room or on-terrace massages can be arranged through the front desk. Not included in the amenity fee.

Surf lessons can be arranged through the front desk with local instructors. Not included in amenity fee — separate booking required.
Canyon horseback riding can be arranged through the hotel — front desk coordinates with local operators including the Blonde Wrangler.
Curated selection of ethical homewares, wellness candles, teas, balms, and local brands — some made by artisans who lived in the property before its renovation. Located in the ground-floor lobby.
Complimentary hybrid Mini Cooper available for guests to borrow and explore Malibu and beyond. Guests top up the tank themselves (about $8 to reach Venice). A legitimately fun perk.
Fill out a coffee card each evening with your preferred milk, sweetener, and delivery time. Coffee and tea arrive at your door between 7–10am. Included in the daily amenity fee. A small but genuinely special touch.
Picnic basket packed by the on-site kitchen, delivered to guests for a beach outing. One of the most-cited guest highlights — pairs well with the complimentary Mini Cooper.
