Abel Tasman Coast in March
Great time to visit
March is one of the best months to visit Abel Tasman Coast.
All Months
Summer here runs from December through March, and that's when Abel Tasman shows off its best side. January temperatures hit 22°C regularly, and the water warms up enough for comfortable swimming. But summer also means crowds — expect packed water taxis and full campsites from Boxing Day through February. The shoulder months of November and April offer a sweet spot: warm enough for hiking and kayaking, but without the summer rush. November brings spring wildflowers and baby fur seals, while April delivers autumn colors and calmer seas. Winter isn't completely off-limits — the coast track stays open year-round — but expect rain, cold water, and limited water taxi services. The park gets about 2,400mm of rain annually, most of it falling between May and September. If you're planning multi-day hiking, check DOC's website for track conditions and book huts well ahead for summer visits.
