Alberta in April
Good time to visit
April is a reasonable time to visit Alberta.
All Months
Summer means crowds but also means access. July and August bring 20°C days perfect for hiking, but expect lineups at Lake Louise and $300/night hotel rates. September hits the sweet spot — fewer tourists, golden aspens, and elk bugling season. June works if you don't mind some snow on high-altitude trails. Winter transforms Alberta into a different planet. Banff becomes a ski destination, Edmonton hosts ice festivals, and the northern lights dance from October through March. But temperatures drop to -30°C, daylight shrinks to six hours, and many mountain roads close. Lake Louise's ice skating rink opens in December. Spring barely exists — it's winter until May, then suddenly summer. The shoulder seasons of May and October offer decent weather and lower prices, but services might be limited in smaller mountain towns.
