April through June offers perfect weather — warm days, cool evenings, and wildflowers covering the mountain slopes. September and October deliver the same comfortable temperatures plus harvest season in wine regions. Summer gets brutally hot, especially around Baku where temperatures hit 40°C (104°F) and humidity from the Caspian makes it worse. But summer also means long daylight hours and festival season. Winter brings snow to the mountains and cheaper hotel rates, though many mountain roads become impassable. The mud volcanoes at Gobustan look most dramatic after spring rains when the bubbling activity increases. Look, if you're planning to hike in the Greater Caucasus, stick to May through September — the weather window is narrow but spectacular.
