Bavarian Alps in May
Good time to visit
May is a reasonable time to visit Bavarian Alps.
All Months
The Bavarian Alps operate on two distinct seasons, and both have their devoted followers. Summer hiking season runs from June through September, with July and August offering the most reliable weather and longest daylight hours. This is prime time for high-altitude hiking, with mountain huts fully operational and cable cars running extended hours.
But here's the thing about Alpine weather — it changes fast. Even in July, you can encounter snow above 2,000 meters, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Always pack layers and waterproof gear, regardless of the morning forecast.
Winter transforms the region into a snow sports paradise from December through March. The ski season typically runs from mid-December to early April, depending on snow conditions. January and February offer the most reliable powder, though also the coldest temperatures and shortest days.
Shoulder seasons have their own appeal. May brings wildflower blooms to lower elevations, though high mountain passes may still be snow-covered. October offers spectacular fall colors and crisp, clear days — perfect for photography.
Avoid late November and early December unless you enjoy muddy trails and closed mountain huts. This is when many businesses shut down for maintenance before winter season begins. Similarly, April can be unpredictable, with wet snow and unstable conditions making hiking challenging.
