Black Hills in June
Great time to visit
June is one of the best months to visit Black Hills.
All Months
May through September offers the best weather and full access to attractions. July and August bring crowds but also perfect camping weather and all trails open.
May and September are sweet spots. Fewer people, mild temperatures, and most facilities operating. Fall colors peak in late September, especially around Spearfish Canyon.
June works well for families. School's out but summer crowds haven't peaked. Wildflowers bloom throughout the hills, and baby animals are visible in Custer State Park.
Avoid Sturgis Rally week in early August unless you love motorcycles. The population swells from 70,000 to over 500,000. Hotels book up a year in advance and prices triple.
Winter transforms the Black Hills into a different place. Many attractions close or reduce hours, but cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are excellent. Temperatures drop below zero regularly.
Spring comes late here. Snow can fall through April, and some mountain roads don't open until May. But if you can handle unpredictable weather, you'll have the place mostly to yourself.
