Bohemian Switzerland in May

Great time to visit

May is one of the best months to visit Bohemian Switzerland.

All Months

Spring arrives late but rewards patience. April brings wildflowers and flowing waterfalls, though nights still dip below freezing. May hits the sweet spot — comfortable hiking weather, fewer crowds, and the forests exploding in every shade of green. The Kamenice River runs high from snowmelt, making the boat rides through the gorges more dramatic. Summer means crowds, especially German families who've been coming here for generations. July and August see temperatures reaching 25°C, perfect for hiking but expect company on popular trails. Book accommodation months ahead — this isn't a place you can wing it during peak season. Thunderstorms roll through regularly, turning sandstone slippery and dangerous. Fall transforms Bohemian Switzerland into a photographer's dream. September offers the best weather — warm days, cool nights, and the first hints of autumn color. October brings peak foliage but unpredictable weather. One day you're hiking in shorts, the next you need winter gear. Winter is for serious hikers only. Snow makes many trails impassable, and the region takes on an otherworldly beauty that few visitors see. The Pravčická brána arch framed by snow-covered trees looks like something from Narnia, but temperatures can drop to -15°C. Many restaurants and guesthouses close from November through March.
