Bolaven Plateau in October

Good time to visit

October is a reasonable time to visit Bolaven Plateau.

All Months

The Bolaven Plateau's elevation creates a different climate from the rest of Laos. Cool season (November through March) brings perfect weather – daytime temperatures around 25°C, cool nights that might require a light jacket, and almost no rain. This is also coffee harvest season, when plantations buzz with activity and you can participate in picking and processing. December through February offers the most comfortable conditions. Waterfalls still flow strongly from the previous rainy season, but trails are dry and accessible. Morning mist often blankets the coffee fields, creating ethereal landscapes that photographers love. Book accommodation in advance during this peak season, especially around Christmas and New Year. Hot season (April through June) brings warmer days but remains more pleasant than lowland Laos thanks to the altitude. This is flowering season for coffee plants, when white blossoms cover the hillsides. However, some waterfalls reduce to trickles, and hiking becomes less comfortable in the midday heat. Rainy season (July through October) transforms the plateau into a green paradise, but creates serious challenges. Heavy downpours can wash out roads and make some areas completely inaccessible. Waterfalls reach peak flow – Dong Hua Sao becomes truly spectacular – but you'll need proper rain gear and flexible plans. Many guesthouses and restaurants close during the wettest months (August and September).
