Canterbury in August

Great time to visit

August is one of the best months to visit Canterbury.

All Months

May through September gives you the best weather and longest days, but July and August bring the biggest crowds. The cathedral gets properly packed during school holidays, and accommodation prices jump 40% in peak summer. September hits the sweet spot — students return so the city buzzes with energy, but tourist crowds thin out after the August rush. Weather stays mild, and you'll get those perfect autumn light shots in the cathedral cloisters. Winter has its own appeal if you don't mind the cold. Canterbury Christmas Market runs through December in the Buttermarket, and the cathedral looks magical during evening services. Just pack layers — those medieval buildings weren't built for central heating, and you'll feel it walking the stone corridors.
