Central Asia in May
Great time to visit
May is one of the best months to visit Central Asia.
All Months
May through September is prime time, but even then you're gambling with weather that changes faster than Central Asian politics. May and September offer the sweet spot – warm days, cool nights, and fewer tourists clogging up the Instagram spots.
Summer (June-August) brings scorching heat to the desert cities. Samarkand hits 40°C regularly, and Turkmenistan's Karakum Desert becomes genuinely dangerous. But this is also when the mountain regions open up. Kyrgyzstan's high passes clear of snow, and you can reach Song-Kol Lake without risking your life.
Winter is brutal but beautiful. Kazakhstan's Almaty gets proper snow and becomes a skiing destination, while the desert cities cool to comfortable temperatures. The downside? Many mountain roads close, limiting your adventure options.
Ramadan affects Muslim-majority countries (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, parts of Kazakhstan). Restaurants close during daylight hours, though hotels usually serve foreign guests. The evening iftar meals are worth experiencing if you're invited.
