Central Otago Wine Region in August

Not the best time

August isn't ideal for Central Otago Wine Region. Consider a different month.

All Months

Summer (December-February) brings perfect wine tasting weather. Days average 25°C with long daylight hours until 9 PM. This is peak season, so book accommodation early and expect crowds at popular wineries. The landscape turns golden, and stone fruit orchards bloom around the vineyards. Autumn (March-May) offers the best wine experiences. Harvest happens in March and April, with many wineries offering picking experiences and special tastings of new releases. The weather stays warm during the day but cools at night. Crowds thin out after Easter, making it ideal for intimate cellar door visits. Winter (June-August) sees snow on the surrounding mountains but rarely in the valleys. Many smaller wineries close or reduce hours, but the major producers stay open. This is when winemakers have time for proper conversations about their craft. Accommodation prices drop significantly. Spring (September-November) brings wildflowers and budbreak in the vineyards. The weather can be unpredictable, with warm days and cold snaps. But you'll have the region largely to yourself, and many wineries release their new vintages during this period.
