Champagne in January

Not the best time

January isn't ideal for Champagne. Consider a different month.

All Months

April through June brings mild weather and green vineyards, plus fewer crowds than summer. May is particularly lovely when the vines flower, though you might catch some rain. September and October offer the best of both worlds — harvest season energy, beautiful autumn colors, and comfortable temperatures for walking between cellars. You might even spot grape pickers in action, though most harvesting happens early morning. Summer (July-August) sees the biggest crowds and highest prices, especially along Avenue de Champagne in Épernay. Many producers close for vacation in August, so check ahead. Winter can be atmospheric with bare vines and cozy cellar tastings, but some smaller houses shut down December through February. And here's something most people don't consider: many champagne houses close on weekends, especially Sundays. Plan your cellar visits for weekdays when possible, or book weekend tours well in advance.
