Cherry Blossoms in April
Great time to visit
April is one of the best months to visit Cherry Blossoms.
All Months
Timing cherry blossoms feels like predicting the weather – because that's exactly what it is. The Japan Meteorological Corporation releases bloom forecasts starting in January, but Mother Nature keeps everyone guessing.
Generally, cherry blossoms start in southern Kyushu in late March, then move north like a pink wave. Tokyo and Kyoto typically peak in early April, while northern cities like Sendai bloom mid to late April.
Here's what most guides won't tell you: full bloom lasts only 4-7 days per location. After that, you get the equally beautiful petal fall, creating pink carpets everywhere. Some prefer this stage – fewer crowds, more romantic.
Weekdays beat weekends by a mile. Popular spots like Ueno Park become human traffic jams on Saturday and Sunday. Visit Tuesday through Thursday for the best experience.
Book accommodations by January for peak season. Seriously. Hotels jack up prices and sell out fast during the two-week window when most of Japan blooms simultaneously.
