Cusco Region in January
Not the best time
January isn't ideal for Cusco Region. Consider a different month.
All Months
May through September is dry season, which means clear Machu Picchu photos but also means crowds and higher prices. July brings the most tourists and the highest hotel rates. But here's what guidebooks don't tell you - shoulder months like May and September offer the best balance. You get decent weather without the July madness. Rainy season (December-March) turns the landscape emerald green, but afternoon downpours are real and some mountain trails close. The Inca Trail shuts down completely in February for maintenance. Look, if you're coming specifically for hiking, stick to dry season. If you want to experience the region beyond the classic tourist circuit, rainy season has its charms and prices drop by 30-40%.
