Deadvlei in July

April through September offers the best conditions. Temperatures stay manageable and rainfall is minimal. May and June are perfect — clear skies, comfortable walking temperatures, and excellent light. Avoid December through February unless you enjoy walking in 40°C heat. The summer rains can also make the clay pan muddy and less photogenic. For photography, sunrise beats sunset hands down. The light hits the dunes behind Deadvlei, creating that famous orange glow. Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise to set up. Midday light is harsh but creates dramatic shadows. The trees look more sculptural in hard light, though it's brutally hot for hiking.
