Diwali in January
Good time to visit
January is a reasonable time to visit Diwali.
All Months
Diwali spans five days, but each day offers different experiences. Dhanteras (day one) is all about shopping—gold markets in Delhi's Karol Bagh and Mumbai's Zaveri Bazaar stay open until midnight. Prices spike, but the energy is infectious.
Choti Diwali (day two) brings the first major lighting ceremonies. Smaller cities like Pushkar and Rishikesh offer more intimate celebrations without Delhi's overwhelming crowds. Hotel rates stay reasonable, and you'll actually get invited into local homes.
Main Diwali (day three) is chaos in major cities. Every building lights up, fireworks start at sunset and continue past midnight. Mumbai's Marine Drive and Delhi's India Gate become massive gathering spots. Book dinner reservations weeks ahead—most restaurants offer special Diwali menus.
Govardhan Puja (day four) focuses on community feasts. Rural areas around Mathura and Vrindavan host the most authentic celebrations. Day five, Bhai Dooj, is family-focused—perfect for cultural immersion if you've made local connections.
Weather in October-November stays pleasant across most of India. Delhi temperatures hover around 25°C, perfect for evening celebrations. But air quality takes a hit from fireworks—pack masks if you're sensitive to pollution.
