Douro Valley in January

Not the best time

January isn't ideal for Douro Valley. Consider a different month.

All Months

September and October deliver the magic - harvest season when the valley buzzes with activity and the weather stays perfect. Temperatures hover around 25°C, crowds thin out after summer, and you might even get invited to stomp grapes the traditional way. Spring brings wildflowers and comfortable hiking weather, though some quintas don't open until April. Summer can be brutal - temperatures hit 40°C and the landscape turns brown. But early morning river cruises and late afternoon tastings make it bearable. Winter? The valley goes into hibernation. Many quintas close, rain turns the terraces muddy, and that romantic river cruise becomes a cold, miserable experience. Stick to April through June or September through October.
