Drakensberg in February

Not the best time

February isn't ideal for Drakensberg. Consider a different month.

All Months

April and May are golden months in the Berg. The summer rains have stopped, the grass is still green, and the waterfalls are flowing. Temperatures hover around 20°C during the day, dropping to near freezing at night in the high peaks. September and October bring spring wildflowers and clear skies. This is prime hiking weather — warm days, cool nights, and minimal rain. But book accommodation early; South African school holidays in September can get busy. Winter (June to August) is bone dry but cold. Snow dusts the high peaks regularly, and night temperatures can drop to -10°C. The upside? Crystal-clear views and empty trails. Just pack serious cold-weather gear. Summer (December to March) brings afternoon thunderstorms and high humidity. The mountains turn emerald green, but hiking can be miserable when the clouds roll in. Flash floods are a real danger in the valleys. That said, summer is when the Tugela Falls really roars. Avoid Easter weekend and December holidays unless you enjoy crowds and inflated prices. The Berg gets packed with South African families during these periods.
