October through April gives you the best weather and longest days, with temperatures reaching 20°C in summer. But here's the catch — this is also peak season, meaning crowds at Milford Sound and higher accommodation prices. May through September brings fewer tourists and dramatic winter light, but expect road closures, cancelled flights, and rain that feels personal. The shoulder seasons of October-November and March-April offer the sweet spot — decent weather, fewer crowds, and autumn colors or spring wildflowers. Rain falls year-round here, so pack waterproof everything regardless of when you visit. Summer days stretch until 9 PM, giving you extra time to explore. Winter days end by 5 PM, but the snow-capped peaks look incredible.
