Fish River Canyon in August
Great time to visit
August is one of the best months to visit Fish River Canyon.
All Months
April through September offers the sweet spot for canyon adventures. Winter mornings are crisp and clear, perfect for photography at Main Viewpoint. Daytime temperatures hover around 25°C - comfortable for hiking without melting. Summer (October-March) turns the canyon into a furnace. Temperatures soar past 45°C and afternoon thunderstorms can trigger dangerous flash floods. The hiking trail closes completely from October 1st to March 15th for safety reasons. May and August see the most visitors, so book accommodations early. For solitude seekers, June and July offer cooler weather and fewer crowds. Early morning visits reward you with golden light painting the canyon walls and wildlife activity at water sources.
