Galápagos Islands in April
Not the best time
April isn't ideal for Galápagos Islands. Consider a different month.
All Months
The Galápagos operate on two seasons that locals call garúa (cool and dry) and caliente (warm and wet). But here's the thing — both offer incredible wildlife encounters, just different ones.
Garúa season runs June through November, bringing cooler temperatures (70-80°F) and frequent drizzle. The Humboldt Current delivers nutrient-rich waters, attracting massive schools of fish and the marine life that feeds on them. This is peak season for snorkeling — visibility reaches 100 feet, and you'll swim with hammerhead sharks, manta rays, and playful sea lions. Waved albatrosses return to Española Island to breed, performing their elaborate courtship dances from April through December.
Caliente season (December through May) brings warmer air (80-90°F) and occasional downpours that turn the islands emerald green. Sea temperatures reach their warmest (75-80°F), perfect for extended snorkeling sessions. This is baby season — marine iguanas nest, sea turtles lay eggs on beaches, and giant tortoises become active in the highlands.
Avoid March if you're prone to seasickness — this is when seas run roughest. December through February brings the heaviest tourist crowds, especially around Christmas and New Year's. For the best balance of weather, wildlife, and smaller crowds, plan for late June through August or September through November.
