Garden Route in October

Great time to visit

October is one of the best months to visit Garden Route.

All Months

October through April gives you the best weather, but each season has trade-offs. Summer (December to February) is peak tourist season for good reason – warm ocean temperatures, long days, and everything is open. But it's also crowded and expensive. Accommodation prices double, restaurants get overwhelmed, and beaches fill up with holiday makers from Johannesburg and Cape Town. Shoulder seasons are magic. March and April deliver warm days, fewer crowds, and restaurants operating at their best. October and November work well too, though the ocean is still chilly from winter. Winter (May to August) isn't written off by locals. Yes, it rains more, and many outdoor activities shut down. But whale watching season runs June to November, hotel prices drop by half, and you'll have hiking trails to yourself. The indigenous forests look incredible after winter rains. Here's what weather apps won't tell you – the Garden Route has microclimates. Hermanus can be foggy while Plettenberg Bay is sunny, all on the same day. Pack layers always. And if you're planning around specific activities, check seasonal schedules. Bungee jumping and canopy tours often close during winter months due to weather and maintenance.
