Golden Circle in October
Good time to visit
October is a reasonable time to visit Golden Circle.
All Months
Summer (June through September) gives you the best weather and longest days. July brings lupine flowers blooming purple across the landscape, and you get nearly 20 hours of daylight. But this is also peak season—expect crowds at every stop and book accommodations well ahead.
September hits the sweet spot: fewer crowds, still-decent weather, and the first hints of Northern Lights after dark. The lupines are gone, but autumn colors paint the landscape in reds and golds.
Winter transforms the Golden Circle into something completely different. Gullfoss partially freezes into ice sculptures, and you might catch the Northern Lights dancing over Þingvellir. But daylight lasts only 4-5 hours in December and January, and weather can shut down roads without warning.
Avoid July if you hate crowds. Tour buses arrive in waves between 11 AM and 2 PM, turning peaceful Geysir into a parking lot nightmare. Start early (8 AM from Reykjavik) or go late (after 4 PM) for a more peaceful experience.
Spring (April-May) can be unpredictable—one day brings sunshine and lupine buds, the next dumps snow. But hotel prices drop, and you get that crisp, clear light that makes Iceland famous.
