Great Sand Dunes National Park in November
Good time to visit
November is a reasonable time to visit Great Sand Dunes National Park.
All Months
Late spring and early fall are ideal — May, June, September, and October offer the perfect balance of weather and crowds. May through July brings Medano Creek to life, creating that amazing contrast between sand and water. The creek typically flows strongest in late May and early June when snowmelt is at its peak.
Summer gets crowded and brutally hot. Surface temperatures on the sand can hit 140°F by afternoon, making dune climbing miserable or dangerous. If you visit in summer, start early — be on the dunes by 8 AM and off by noon.
Fall is fantastic. September and October bring cooler temperatures, smaller crowds, and stunning aspen colors in the surrounding mountains. The sand is still warm enough for comfortable climbing, but won't burn your feet.
Winter transforms the park into something magical. Snow-covered dunes create an otherworldly landscape, though many facilities close and you'll need winter gear. Spring can be windy with unpredictable weather.
