The rice terraces fill with water in April, creating those mirror-like reflections everyone photographs. September to November offers crisp air and autumn colors, plus the harvest season in the terraces. Summer gets brutally hot and humid — July temperatures hit 35°C with matching humidity levels. But summer also brings the most dramatic thunderstorms over the karst peaks. Winter stays mild compared to northern China, around 10°C, though the mountains can get chilly. Avoid Chinese New Year and Golden Week in October unless you enjoy sharing photo spots with thousands of domestic tourists. The shoulder seasons of late March and early November give you the sweet spot of good weather and manageable crowds.
