Hawaiian Islands in May

Great time to visit

May is one of the best months to visit Hawaiian Islands.

All Months

Hawaii has two seasons: perfect and slightly less perfect. May through October brings warmer temperatures (80-85°F) and less rain, but also higher prices and bigger crowds. November through April sees more rain and slightly cooler temps (75-80°F), plus humpback whales migrating through Hawaiian waters. But here's the thing - 'rainy season' usually means brief afternoon showers, not all-day downpours. Trade winds blow year-round, keeping humidity manageable even in summer. Winter brings huge waves to north-facing beaches (perfect for watching surfers, dangerous for swimming), while south shores stay calmer. Avoid late December through early January unless you enjoy paying $400+ per night for mediocre hotels. Spring break (March-April) and summer (June-August) pack the beaches with families. September and October offer the sweet spot: good weather, fewer crowds, and shoulder season prices. Hurricane season runs June through November, but direct hits happen maybe once per decade.
