Horn of Africa in October
Great time to visit
October is one of the best months to visit Horn of Africa.
All Months
October through March offers the most comfortable weather across the region, with dry conditions and cooler temperatures. The Ethiopian highlands stay pleasant year-round thanks to elevation, but the rainy season from June to September turns roads into mud tracks and makes some areas completely inaccessible. December and January are peak tourist season, especially around Orthodox Christmas and Timkat celebrations - book accommodation well ahead in Lalibela and Gondar. The Danakil Depression becomes nearly unbearable from April to September when temperatures regularly exceed 125°F. But here's the thing about timing in the Horn of Africa - religious calendars matter more than weather. Ethiopian Orthodox Easter, Meskel (Finding of the True Cross), and various Islamic holidays create incredible cultural experiences but also mean crowded transport and higher prices. The dry season also brings dust storms, particularly in February and March. If you're planning serious trekking in the Simien or Bale Mountains, stick to October through February when trails are dry and views are clear.
