Good time to visit

December is a reasonable time to visit Huangshan Region.

All Months

April through May brings the region to life. Wildflowers bloom across the mountainsides, waterfalls run full from spring melt, and the famous sea of clouds appears most mornings. Temperatures hover around 15-20°C in the valleys, perfect for village exploring. But this is also peak season — book accommodations well in advance. September through November offers the year's best weather. Autumn colors paint the mountainsides in brilliant reds and golds, and crisp air means clearer views from the peaks. Morning temperatures can drop near freezing above 1,500 meters, so pack layers. This is when local photographers camp out for sunrise shots. Winter (December through February) transforms Huangshan into a different world entirely. Snow clings to the granite peaks and pine branches, creating scenes that inspired countless ink paintings. But cable cars sometimes close due to weather, and mountain hotels have limited heating. Only serious photographers and winter hiking enthusiasts should attempt it. Summer brings crowds and heat to the valleys, though temperatures stay comfortable on the mountain peaks. July and August see frequent afternoon thunderstorms that can make hiking dangerous. If you must visit in summer, start your mountain hikes before dawn to beat both crowds and weather.
