April through September gives you the best of Ixelles. The neighborhood comes alive when the terraces open and the parks fill up with picnickers. Place Flagey transforms into an outdoor living room, and the weekend markets feel like neighborhood parties. Summer hits differently here than in the tourist center. While Grand Place swelters under tour groups, Ixelles keeps its cool under the tree-lined streets. The Bois de la Cambre provides an easy escape when the city gets too much. But don't write off the shoulder seasons. October still has warm afternoons perfect for gallery hopping, and the autumn light makes those art nouveau facades look like paintings. Winter gets gray and wet — that's just Brussels — but the cozy cafés and indoor markets keep the neighborhood humming. Avoid August if you want the full local experience. Half the residents flee for vacation, and many of the best independent restaurants close for the month. The university crowd disappears too, leaving things quieter but less energetic.
