Japan in February

Good time to visit

February is a reasonable time to visit Japan.

All Months

Cherry blossom season (late March to early May) brings crowds and inflated prices, but the hype is real. Tokyo's peak bloom usually hits the first week of April, while northern areas like Sendai bloom two weeks later. Book accommodations months ahead during this period. Autumn delivers equally stunning colors without the madness. November in Kyoto transforms temple grounds into red and gold masterpieces. The weather stays comfortable, and you can actually get dinner reservations. Plus, autumn festivals happen throughout the country — Takayama's festival in October rivals anything in spring. Winter opens up different possibilities. Hokkaido's powder snow attracts skiers from December through March, while hot springs (onsen) feel perfect in cold weather. Tokyo rarely sees snow, but winter illuminations light up neighborhoods like Omotesando and Shibuya. Summer brings humidity that hits like a wall, especially in July and August. But it's also festival season — fireworks displays, summer matsuri, and the famous Gion Festival in Kyoto. Air conditioning everywhere makes it bearable, and summer means longer days for sightseeing. Just pack lightweight, breathable clothes and prepare to sweat.
