Kakadu National Park in December

Not the best time

December isn't ideal for Kakadu National Park. Consider a different month.

All Months

May through September is peak season for good reason - it's the dry season when roads are accessible, waterfalls are still flowing from the wet season, and the humidity won't melt you into the ground. July is the sweet spot: cool mornings perfect for hiking, warm days ideal for swimming, and clear skies that make the rock art pop against sandstone walls. But here's what the guidebooks won't tell you - the shoulder seasons have their own magic. April sees the last of the big storms, waterfalls at their most dramatic, and wildlife concentrated around shrinking water sources. October brings the first build-up storms, spectacular lightning shows, and the start of the bird breeding season. Avoid December through March unless you're a masochist. It's the wet season, when roads flood, humidity hits 90%, and cyclones can trap you for days. Many tracks close completely, and what remains open is often underwater or impassable without a high-clearance 4WD. The build-up season (October-December) is polarizing - some love the dramatic weather and empty campgrounds, others find the humidity unbearable. If you're heat-sensitive, stick to the dry season. If you want the park to yourself and don't mind sweating through your shirt by 9am, the build-up offers a completely different Kakadu experience.
