Kazakhstan in January
Not the best time
January isn't ideal for Kazakhstan. Consider a different month.
All Months
May through September offers the best weather, but even summer brings extremes. Temperatures swing from 35°C days to 10°C nights. The steppes bloom briefly in May and June — if you time it right, you'll see wildflowers stretching to every horizon.
July and August are peak season, meaning higher prices and crowded attractions around Almaty. But this is also when mountain hiking opens up in the Tian Shan range. The cable car to Shymbulak ski resort runs year-round and offers spectacular views.
Winter hits hard and early. November through March sees temperatures drop to -30°C in the north. Nur-Sultan becomes one of the coldest capitals on earth. Only visit in winter if you're serious about cold-weather activities or want to see the northern lights.
Shoulder seasons work well for budget travelers. April can be muddy as snow melts, but accommodation costs drop significantly. October brings clear skies and comfortable temperatures, though mountain passes start closing. The key is layering — weather changes fast on the steppes.
