Kelabit Highlands in November
Not the best time
November isn't ideal for Kelabit Highlands. Consider a different month.
All Months
March through September offers the most reliable weather, with fewer flight cancellations and better trail conditions. But even during the 'dry' season, expect afternoon showers that turn paths muddy.
May to July is ideal for trekking. Trails dry out enough for comfortable hiking, and you'll catch the rice planting season when the paddies turn brilliant green. Temperatures hover around 20-25°C during the day, dropping to 15°C at night.
The harvest festival in late March or early April showcases traditional Kelabit culture at its finest. Communities gather for rice wine ceremonies, traditional dancing, and epic feasts that last for days. But book accommodation well ahead – the few beds fill up fast.
Avoid December through February if possible. Heavy rains flood rivers, wash out trails, and ground flights for days at a time. The highlands turn into a muddy, cloud-shrouded world that's beautiful but challenging to navigate.
Here's the thing about weather in the highlands – it changes fast. Morning sun can turn into afternoon downpours within minutes. Pack rain gear regardless of when you visit, and build flexibility into your schedule for weather delays.
