Kerala in January
Great time to visit
January is one of the best months to visit Kerala.
All Months
October through March gives you Kerala at its absolute best. The monsoons have washed everything clean, temperatures hover around 23-32°C, and humidity drops to actually bearable levels. This is peak season though, so expect higher prices and crowds at popular spots like Munnar and Alleppey. December and January are perfect for houseboat trips — the backwaters are calm and you can actually sit on the deck without melting. But here's a local secret: February and March offer the best wildlife viewing in places like Periyar National Park because animals come to water sources more frequently. The monsoon season (June to September) transforms Kerala into something out of a fairy tale. The hills turn impossibly green, waterfalls thunder down mountain faces, and the air smells like wet earth and spices. Ayurvedic treatments are traditionally most effective during monsoon months because your body absorbs the oils better in humid conditions. Just know that heavy rains can cancel boat trips and make mountain roads tricky. April and May are brutally hot and humid — temperatures hit 35°C with 80% humidity. Skip these months unless you're specifically coming for Ayurvedic treatments, which some practitioners say work best in the heat.
