Komodo Islands in January
Not the best time
January isn't ideal for Komodo Islands. Consider a different month.
All Months
The dry season from April to October offers the best conditions for both dragon spotting and diving. May through September is peak season — clear skies, calm seas, and dragons are more active in the cooler morning temperatures. But this also means higher prices and crowded viewpoints, especially on Padar Island.
April and October are sweet spots. You'll still get good weather but avoid the worst crowds and peak season pricing. The dragons are just as active, and diving conditions remain excellent. Water temperatures stay around 26-28°C year-round, perfect for extended underwater exploration.
Avoid the wet season from November to March. Heavy rains make trekking muddy and dangerous, while rough seas can cancel boat trips entirely. Some dive sites become inaccessible due to strong currents and poor visibility. The dragons also become less active during the hottest, most humid months.
For the best dragon encounters, start your treks early — around 6:30 AM when temperatures are cooler and the animals are hunting. By midday, most dragons retreat to shade and become sluggish. The golden hour before sunset offers the best light for photography, though dragon activity drops significantly by then.
