Kyushu in July

Not the best time

July isn't ideal for Kyushu. Consider a different month.

All Months

March through May gives you the sweet spot — cherry blossoms without the crushing crowds of mainland Japan. Kyushu's sakura season starts earlier than Tokyo or Kyoto, usually peaking in late March. Temperatures hover in the perfect 60-70°F range, and the humidity hasn't kicked in yet. September through November delivers the other golden window. Fall colors peak in mid-November in the mountain areas around Mount Aso and Kirishima. The typhoon season mostly wraps up by October, and you'll get crisp, clear days perfect for volcano hiking. But here's the thing about Kyushu's seasons — the hot springs feel amazing year-round. Even summer's brutal humidity melts away when you're soaking in a mountain onsen at sunset. Winter brings snow to the northern mountains but stays mild along the coasts. January and February see the fewest tourists, which means better ryokan rates and empty hiking trails around the volcanoes.
