Lake Malawi in June
Great time to visit
June is one of the best months to visit Lake Malawi.
All Months
The dry season from May through September offers the best weather for visiting Lake Malawi. Skies stay clear, temperatures hover around a comfortable 25°C during the day, and the lake remains calm for swimming and snorkeling. This is peak tourist season, so book accommodation in advance, especially around Cape Maclear and Nkhata Bay.
July and August bring the coolest temperatures – perfect for hiking and exploring beyond the water. The trade-off is busier beaches and higher prices. But even 'busy' at Lake Malawi feels relaxed compared to most destinations.
The hot season runs from September through November. Temperatures can hit 35°C, making midday activities uncomfortable. But the lake water stays perfect for swimming, and you'll have beaches mostly to yourself. Accommodation prices drop significantly.
Rains arrive in December and continue through April. Heavy downpours can make roads impassable, especially the dirt track to Cape Maclear. But the landscape turns lush green, and dramatic storm clouds create spectacular sunsets. Some lodges close during peak rainy months (January-March), so check ahead.
The lake's water temperature stays around 24°C year-round – warmer than most swimming pools.
